About Us

In 1989, Mary Tyler McClenehan, a long-time community activist and the existing community development organizations requested LISC open an office in Richmond.
Since 1990, Virginia LISC has assisted community-based development organizations in their efforts to transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy communities.
LISC consults with community development organizations to ensure that they form appropriate business plans, create solid financing strategy, and secure the right human and capital resources before new projects are launched.
Moreover, we are able to help these organizations develop plans that look holistically at their neighborhoods, integrating their needs for residential, health, education, recreation and commercial developments.
We help them identify their neighborhoods’ most pressing needs, identify the best way to meet those needs, and then work hand-in-hand with the CDCs and their partners to execute the plans.
By providing grants, working capital, development funds, and technical support to non-profit developers and localities, Virginia LISC has created opportunities for dozens of neighborhoods to receive strategic real estate investments, providing families with access to better housing, childcare, and employment choices. Through the generosity of both private and public-sector supporters, LISC and its partners have invested over $450 million in the central Virginia region.
