We asked LISC’s Southside Financial Opportunity Center’s bilingual employment coach, Nury Mojica, a few questions about her love for her job, community and how she celebrates her heritage. LISC Virginia is very luck to have Nury as an FOC coach!
What do you love most about your job at the FOC?
NM: I love my job because it gives me the opportunity to help the community, especially those underserved; by empowering them with tools and resources such as: employment, education, financial, benefits and housing.
Why is it important to you to support Latino residents?
NM: It is important because we are part of this community as well as other cultures. Latinos has a lot to offer we contribute tremendously to the entire economy. Latinos are focus on doing well, learn and connect with resources. I encourage them that the accent is not a barrier, the accent is the spice we add to the conversation.
How do you/are you celebrating your Hispanic heritage? :
NM: By supporting the Latino community, by participating in festivals, and gathering with friends and family to embrace the cultures. We are a melting pot of cultures, unique in different ways; such as: music, food, and accents - Yes, the majority of us speak Spanish, however we do have different accents among us.
What are you most proud of in terms of being a Panamanian?
NM: Panama means a country full of abundance; that is how I describe myself, “a person full of resources to my community.
